Industrial Comercial San Martín is a Nicaraguan producer and distributor of beef meat and by-products. It was incorporated in Nandaime, Nicaragua in 1973 and is the largest player in this industry in Central America, as well as one of the largest exporters in Nicaragua. It holds livestock in its own feedlots, processes and sells meat together with other related products like bone meal, and produces biogas.
San Martin’s production model is focused on self-sustainability & eco-friendly production by generating its own renewable energy using its two digestors and biogas power plants and by substituting most of the fossil fuel usage in the production process.
Funding Objective
The DEG debt financing in the amount of USD 30m is mainly used for permanent working capital needs of Industrial Comercial San Martín, thereby stabilizing the company’s operations and balance sheet.
Reasons for financing
Nicaragua is the largest meat producer in Central America, and meat production is one of the country’s most significant economic activities. Industrial Comercial San Martín is the primary employer in Nandaime, providing jobs to 1,300 individuals and partnering with over 2,000 small farmers in the region. DEG supports the company in improving its environmental and social (E&S) standards, promoting standard-setting in a country with minimal E&S regulation.
DEG enables the company to continue its ongoing feedlot expansion, allowing it to produce higher-quality meat in a more eco-friendly and sustainable manner. The investment aligns with DEG’s strategy of fostering local private sector growth in Latin America, particularly by supporting companies that create economic opportunities while improving environmental and social standards.
