ASTARTA

Customer

Astarta, established in 1993, is one of the biggest privately owned and vertically integrated agricultural businesses in Ukraine. The Group is active in crop- and dairy farming, sugar production and soybean processing. While sugar is primarily sold to domestic food and beverage producers, large parts of Astarta’s total production are also exported to Europe, Middle East, Asia and Africa.

Funding Objective

DEG provides a long-term facility totaling USD 20m for financing of investments in modern equipment and working capital.

Reasons for financing

Astarta facilitates the creation of decent jobs in rural areas of Ukraine and is a generally inclusive employer. It increases local community income through purchases of soybean and sugar beet as well as leasing agricultural land from local farmers and individual landowners.

By the permanent implementation of international best practice and best available technology, Astarta promotes sustainable agriculture.

The Group runs dedicated environment programs on, inter alia, waste reduction and biodiversity conservation. Part of DEG’s investment will be directed at modernisation of production technology, aiming to further reduce consumption of natural resources under “Best Available Technology” program.

In the rural areas where Astarta is active, it financially supports inter alia road repairs, medicine purchases, lightning, gasification etc.

The project fits into DEG´s strategy of promoting sustainable private sector businesses in Ukraine that contribute to local income and job generation.
